George Clark, a surveyor general for East Florida loved Amelia Island, Florida. He convinced Spanish Governor White that the post and town spreading around it needed a plan. In May of 1811, he was appointed to carry out a plan to align the streets and measure the lots. Governor White proclaimed that the town be called Fernandina in honor of King Ferdinand VII Catholic Monarch of Spain.
