The Spanish launched a brutal advance against the French led by Pedro Menendez de Aviles in what proved to be a struggle not only between two nations for territorial rights, but also for religious beliefs. The Spanish Period had begun, followed by 236 years of Spanish domination. In an effort to further validate their claim they established a mission on Amelia Island called Santa Maria de Sena whose purpose was to convert the Native Americans to the Catholic Faith and to supply crops to support survival. This mission would serve as the inspiration for the island’s second European name.
