England had won rights to settle Amelia Island and Sir John Perceval, the Earl of Egmont was given 10,000 acres on Amelia. He saw great potential for plantation owners in the Amelia River because of its deep-water bar. Through the successful management of Stephen Egan, Egmont and his heirs profited by raising indigo and turning it into rich blue dye to be exported to Europe.
