Chloe Merrick was eager to help educate the many freed men liberated by the Civil War. She arrived on Amelia and opened a school in the Episcopal Church. Harrison Reed was so impressed with her school that he helped her purchase General Finegan’s abandoned home for an orphanage. Reed became Governor of Florida and married Chloe in August of 1869.
