Confederate Memories (1861-1862) Confederate year and Eighth Flag
Florida seceded from the Union and the flag of the Confederacy flew over Fort Clinch. Legend has it that Jefferson Davis the president of the Confederacy stayed in the Williams House to determine if Amelia Island was defensible against the Union troops. Soon word of a Union flotilla reached Amelia and her residents and Confederate troops marched off the island.
