Previous Guests Honor Williams House

Breakfast is set at the Williams House

It was a pleasure recently to receive an award certificate from Trip Advisor for having achieved a 4.5 star ( out of 5 ) rating from our  guests.  We consider it a challenge and part of our mission to both create the service and experience at a five star level and to please guests sufficiently to have them take time to provide a review. As we start our sixth year of owning and operating the Williams House, we have continued to focus on our guest experience and anticipating their needs and wants.    Of course we don’t get it right every  time, but we believe the 4.5 out of 5 rating is a signal that most of what we do works well for our guests.   We appreciate all our previous guests who have provided feedback and for the favorable comments you gave us.  We also appreciate the honesty of the occasional guest who has not been satisfied and we have used these  opportunities to continue improving.

The  Williams House also was listed by Florida Monthly Magazine’s October issue for where to “stay and play” in Florida’s unique hotels, resorts and Bed and Breakfast  Inns.  We are always delighted to represent a different experience for travelers and guests who are looking for something unique and enjoyable. Historic Fernandina Beach, the 1856 Williams House, historic tours, the museum, Fort Clinch and the numerous large live oaks help create a feeling of going back in time and experiencing a little bit of what it was like to live on this Island in the 1800′s.  Of course, you can then slip into the modern amenities of the Inn and feel like 2010!  We would love for you to come and join us at the Williams House.

Sailing Adventure at Williams House-Amelia Island

williams house owners try out windward sunset sail

Deborah’s daughters were staying at the Williams House this week and her older daughter, Jaime led a scrapbooking retreat.  While they were here, we took the group out on a sailing adventure with Windward Sailing for a sunset cruise in the Amelia River.  It was a beautiful evening with a nice sunset, calm seas and warm temps.  We took along some subs from our local Fernandina Deli on 8th street and a few beers and wine.  We enjoyed seeing fort clinch from the river side, shrimp boats at the docks, Cumberland Island, porpoises( or dolphins ) and learning a bit from our experienced captain about sailing.  He even let Deborah steer the boat for a while as he rigged the sails.  We’ve had several guests take this private sail and all have enjoyed it.  We can now add our own reccommendation for a fun experience and a great calming end to a day.

Williams' and Goff's enjoy their favorite top porch hangout

Goff's and Williams' enjoy favorite WH hangout on top porch

Fifteen years of enjoying and celebrating the annual Shrimp festival at the Williams House is quite an achievement.  The Goff’s and Williams’  have been comuing to Fernandina and catching the action at the Williams House since the second year of it’s history as a B&B.  The first year they were too late to get a room, but signed up with Chris and Dick, the original owners, for the next year and they’ve been back every year since.  (more…)

Boomer meets new friends from the Williams House

Warmer days have finally arrived on Amelia Island and guests are once again out and about town, taking carriage rides, relaxing on the front porch, walking to dinners and downtown and visiting Fort clinch and the beaches.  Spring is a fantastic time of the year here on Amelia Island.  Flowers are now in bloom including just about every variety possible.  I’m sure we will have  a few cool days yet, but it has been shorts weather recently and we are happy to see it arrive. New Year's Fun with Guests and Family

New Year's eve table is set

New Year’s eve is always an enjoyable time and our wine hour is always a little fancier to prepare the mood for celebration.  This year Byron’s son Tim and his wife Kasey joined us for a few days on their way to Colorado for mission training.  They thought they had already arrived in Colorado when they felt our local colder than normal temps, but had fun anyway.  We were able to enjoy a couple of the latest movies during this time, including Avatar, which we all thought was one of the best movies we’ve seen in a long while. I loved the 3d effects and kept reaching out to pick up the floating flowers from the movie.   It was a good time, but sad to say, Deborah and I didn’t make it to the ball drop for New Year’s eve.  Breakfast comes too early and the B&B!

Guests huddle up for a carriage ride

We have experienced below average temps for the Christmas week leading to New Year’s eve but brave guests chose to learn about the historic town with local carriage rides.  Of course Jazz had no problems since he has grown a hefty layer of fur for just such an occurence.

Cindy & Jazz prepare to take guests on Christmas eve tour

Cindy and Jazz prepare to tour guests thru historic downtown

The Williams House Christmas experience begins on Christmas eve with horse drawn carriage rides thru  historic Fernandina Beach while remaining guests enjoy heavy hors d’oevres with wines, hot cider, coffee and tea.  Each thirty minute ride gives guests a glimpse into times past and the historical homes in our downtown area.   It was a warm day this year with temps around 70 degrees, with rain moving in just after our tours were completed.

After a filling Williams House breakfast on Christmas morning, guests have until 2:30 to take walks, naps, bike rides or just relax before Deborah’s afternoon buffet is served.  This year it included ham, unforgetable chicken casserole, broccoli salad, scallop potatoes, sweet potato casserole, squash casserole, pasta salad, butter beans,  and rolls.  Dessert included pumpkin pie, pecan pie, cream puffs, danish pastries and brownies,  wines, ice tea, apple cider, coffee, and water.  A feast fit for any occasion, but especially enjoyable on a warm Christmas day.

Williams House decorated for Christmas

Williams House decorated for Christmas

This time of year the Williams House comes alive with decorations both inside and out in recognition of the Christmas season.  Beginning in early November we decorate all rooms in the house including each guest room with special touches for the season.  Virtually every room has some type of Christmas tree, some larger than others.  Knicknacks of the Christmas season adorn mantels, dressers and tables in every corner of the Inn.  The outside lights welcome guests in the evening and warm decorations, trees and fireplaces make them feel at home inside. Ghostly Experiences

Dianne prepares participants for the ghost tour

Dianne prepares participants for the ghost tour

In October we offered guests a special package that included a guided Amelia Island Ghost Tour one evening, followed by a horse drawn carriage ghost tour with “Boomer” the second evening.   We hadn’t been on the walking tour for  awhile, so we joined up with two couples staying at the Williams House and set off for an evening of history and ghostly tales.  Of course, the tour starts at the Williams House, so it was fun to hear some of the tales and add a few experiences of our own to Dianne’s discussion. Several people captured some orbs on their cameras floating along the front porch!

The tour takes visitors by many of the famous houses in town that are also connected to some prior or current ghostly activity.  We stopped at Kate’s tree and the Bailey house.  Stories say that Kate Bailey tied herself to the tree with a shotgun to prevent the town from taking out the beautiful live oak to widen the street near her home. The Thompson house across the street has had apparitions of Nettie Thompson passing thru walls where the door to her kitchen used to be, as well as movement of items in rooms when people are visiting.

The tour goses by the Florida House, apparently with quite a lot of ghost activity and recent site of a paranormal weekend with a group that does TV episodes.  As the oldest hotel in Florida, it should have some ghosts!

Like most ghost tours, the fun ends at the graveyard near the Episcopal church, where the Williams family is buried and where Dianne says there is a lot of paranormal activity.  Dianne has found that holding the camera away from your body, over your shoulder creates the best pictures of orbs and colored light activity.  I’m not sure if there is any science to this, but it did produce some action on her camera!

Sunset near the Marina

Sunset near the Marina

Many evenings, we end the day on the island with a georgous sunset over the Amelia River.  It is particularly attractive with boats, piers and far off islands in the picture.  I enjoy walking the few blocks to the harbor and checking out nature’s latest light show as the day comes to an end.  I wonder how often the Williams family took in the sunsets some 152 years ago when the streets were unpaved, electricity wasn’t yet available and horses and carriages were how you traveled.
